Signs it's the opener

- The chain or belt hangs slack, or has snapped
- No sound and no light, even from the wall button, though the outlet and breaker are fine
- It quit after a power surge
On the visit
We start with the simple things: power, the wall button and the remotes.
Then we open up the opener and check the drive gear, the chain or belt, and the logic board.
You get a repair price and, if the opener is getting old, a price for a new one. You pick.
We run the door up and down with you, then test the safety reverse.
Repair or replace?
On a chain-drive opener past about 10 years, the nylon drive gear is the usual failure. A new gear gets it running again. At that age, though, the same money can go further on a new belt drive, so we'll price both and you choose.
Look for the two sensors
Every home opener sold since 1993 has two safety sensors near the floor, one on each side of the door. If yours has none, it's older than that or someone bypassed them. That's worth fixing for safety, and we'll point it out if we see it.
Questions
How much is garage door opener repair in Palo Alto?
Opener repair starts at $209 for most chain and belt drive openers. Putting in a new belt drive with two remotes and a wall button starts at $765.
Why did my opener's gear strip?
Age, and a door out of balance. When a spring weakens, the opener ends up carrying weight it was never sized for, and the nylon gear takes the wear.
Do you bring a new opener with you?
Yes. We carry openers on the truck, so if yours isn't worth fixing, the new one can go in on the same visit.
