Garage door remote not working
Start with a new battery and the wall button. Those two checks tell you if it's the remote or the opener.
Four quick checks
Put a fresh battery in the remote. A dead battery is the first thing to rule out.
Press the wall button. If the door runs, the opener works, and the trouble is the remote or the opener's receiver.
If the wall button does nothing either, press the reset on the opener's outlet if it has one, and check the breaker.
If the remote works only up close, try it with the LED bulb taken out of the opener. Some LED bulbs interfere with the remote's signal.
Other reasons it stops
- A power cut erased the remote's pairing. Your opener's manual shows how to pair it again, or we can do it on a visit.
- Weather has worn out the keypad's buttons.
- The opener's logic board failed after a power surge. Then nothing works, wall button included.
If the opener itself is the problem, opener repair starts at $209.
What can raise it
- A new logic board. If one costs close to a new opener, you'll see both prices side by side.
You'll see the price at the door before anything gets replaced.
Door stuck open?
If the door is open and neither the remote nor the wall button will close it, call us, after hours included.
Questions
Why does my remote only work right next to the garage?
A weak battery first. If a new one doesn't help, look at the bulbs in the opener, since some LED bulbs cut the remote's range.
My remote stopped after a power outage. Can it be fixed?
Usually, yes. A power event can wipe the opener's memory of the remote, and pairing it again brings it back.
Does a new opener come with remotes?
Yes. A new belt-drive opener starts at $765 installed, with two remotes and a wall button.
